The officia FTM answer FTM 11: How do I split my file using the All-In-One tree? Question I would like to be able to take a portion of my file to send to a friend or family member, but the information needs to show only my family and not my husband's, or vice-versa. What is the best way to accomplish this task? Answer Let's suppose that you are a married female and your Family File contains information on both your family and your husband's family. You come into contact with one of your husband's relatives and you want to share just his side of the family with this person because they aren't interested in your ancestors. The following directions will allow you to prune off everyone in your husband's family. Unlike regular descendant and ancestor trees which only show you the direct bloodline, the All-In-One tree will allow you to gather everyone related to your husband, not just the bloodline relatives. NOTE: Because this process involves detaching an individual in your file, we recommend that you back up your file before you proceed with this step. If you need help backing up your file, click here. Start Family Tree Maker and open the Family File containing the individuals you wish to put into a separate file. Go to the Family Page of your parents and place the cursor in your name in the list of children. From the People menu choose Fix Relationship Mistakes and then Detach Child. Go to your husband's Family Page and place your cursor in his name. You can use the Index of Individuals to find him. From the View menu choose All-In-One Tree. Once the tree has been generated go to the Contents menu and select Options. Remove the check mark from Show Unrelated Trees and place a checkmark in the Show Unconnected Step-Family Trees box. Press OK to reformat the tree with your new option settings. From the File menu choose Copy/Export Individuals in Tree. Give the file you are creating a name, make a note of the location where you choose to save your file and press the Save button. Now, open the file you just created and make sure that it has everyone in it that you want. You now have a couple of options on creating the proper type of file to share. If the person has the same or newer version of Family Tree Maker, open the file you just created and use the Backup Family File command in the File menu to create a compressed back (*.FBC) file. If the person doesn't use Family Tree Maker open the file you just created and click here for instructions on exporting a File to GEDCOM. Glen

Yes! I'd like to know exactly this. I bought FTM 2005 hoping to be able to print up 'bits' of my tree to include siblings, but can't see how to without buying extra bits! PLEASE nudge that thread! Allie x

I have FTM 2005 and have started to put hubbys tree on my own, which I wish I maybe hadn't now. I want to take some info for his family to see this bank hol and am wondering how best to do this. I don't want to print off all my tree too, but I don't know how to separate it. I would like to be able to show the siblings etc, so not just the direct line ancestry. Would be really grateful for any tips. Thanks.
