Jeanie All those names sound very similar, so I dont think it was a question of 'adopting' a name, its just that it was frequently misspelled, misheard and mistranscribed! OC

The trouble is that I think John must have adopted the name Broughton. It is one of those names that have followed the family. When his father, Benjamin Brewerton married for the first time he did it under the name Burton and the second time it was under the name Broughton. He could not read or write so presumably had no idea what was written. Thanks for the replies Jeanie A.

I've had this prob too, I have 2 Vareys in my tree, the eldest Varey has been mistranscribed as Nancy. The second 1 is down as Varia on the original but transcribed as Maria, has taken me forever to track them down Stacy

hiya, if you know for certain the name is correct you can correct the name within ancestry, so to avoid this problem in future, it will take a few weeks for it to be updated, but if anyone else is looking it will eventually help them, when you get to the individual page of person, to your right there is a panel, with comments/corrections on it, if you click on that you can ammend christian/surnames, however, you have to ammend all names of family,( it doesnt ammend them automatically) the other name will still be there, but your new name will be in a speech bubble with A + sign next to it, when mouse hovers over it, it will reveal the other name HTH Julie

I have been searching for some years for my gt grandfathers half brother. He was John Brewerton 1829 Hawarden Flintshire. He is on the 1841 and 51 but nothing after that. I put in just John born Hawarden and he appeared on some census as Broughton. I could not find him on the 1861 and traced him via his wife. On this he is called Bradburn born in Lancs. I'm sure its him because of childs age and wife. On some of the census Hawarden was spelt incorrectly so I found him under John born Flintshire. The point I'm trying to make? If any of his decendants try looking for him , they will never find him. What a mess. Jeanie A.
