A sort-of cousin has very kindly e-mailed me a whole lot of photos, including one of my father's maternal grandfather (of whom I never expected to get a photo, so I'm thrilled to bits!). He appears very smart, in what my M-i-L would have referred to as Sunday-go-to-Meetings attire, and has a lapel badge in his left lapel. The photo is sepia, so I can't give colours, but it looks as if it is leaf-shaped (?sycamore, ivy? - I don't think it's actually a maple) with a darker centre, crossed with a white? stripe (possibly scrolled - but can't enlarge enough to tell). It has that bright edge I associate with enamel badges. He was a thatcher (or ag. lab., sometimes) and also a Lay Preacher in the Congregational Church. Does anyone recognise the description of the badge? |

Hi Christine, Could it be a Laurel Leaf ? They were, I think, issued, either with a medal or when a medal winner warrented special praise. (as in medal plus). Just an idea, Mick. |

Thanks for trying to help. I was beginning to think no-one had noticed! I'm not convinced about the idea of it being a laurel leaf, because the shape isn't right. Laurel leaves are sort-of oval, with pointed ends (fish-eye), but his is more triangular - wider at the base and with a pair of sub-points either side of the main point... but not very tall compared with width. I just wish the photo were of a quality which would allow me to zoom in without it getting pixillated. Christine |

I hadn't thought of the Local History bit. The tricky bit is to work out where it was taken - we aren't sure when it was taken, and the family moved about a bit. They spent a lot of time near Banbury, but then moved up to Coleshill. So it's part Oxon and part Warks. And I'm not sure whether it's a Church thing or a thatching thing - or something else altogether. Christine |
