Hi Could any one help please. I am looking for a George Pomfret. I know that his birthday was 4th January. Relative not sure of date of birth but thinks it was around 1927. I have searched on ancestry and they dont have an index for jan quarter 1927 for this surname. I think I have found his death - Pomfret George R W age 3 Bolton 8c 331 July quarter 1930 - but will obviously have to check. Child would have been born in Bolton area, MMN Rumbol. The same thing happened when I was looking for my MIL - I didnt get an index for the relevant period - but Smiley Sam found her for me. Why? What am I doing wrong - or where else should I be looking? Helenx x x (now terminally bemused)

Helen, you where right that the name Pomfret doesn't come up for Q1. I actually put in surname of Poo (!!!) and got Q1 up for 1927 and went back a page. Hope this makes sense. Marie

If the quarter doesn't come up, it's often because the index is based on the last name on the page. If the last name on the page is a correction, then it may not be the last name alphabetically, so it looks as if the names between the corrective surname and the end of the page don't exist. What I usually do is to go from a quarter where it's working properly (pref in the same year) and then go to the link at the top of the page. I click on the Year, which goes to a page with the four Quarters. I then click on the Qtr I'm actually after (assuming it's there, of course!) - and then on the relevant letter (assuming that's there!). If you use that technique, it's worth noting which page you were on - and out of how many - on the qtr you've jumped from... say 37 out of 54. Then when you get to the new qtr, you have an idea which page to jump to - say 40 out of 60, or 74 out of 108 - whatever. Christine

Christine, Thank you very much, I will add that to the word file I have of tips and hints I have picked up so far. So frustrating when you know the relatives are there but cant access the record! Still, thanks to you and Marie, that shouldnt be a problem for me anymore. Thank you Helenx x x (the better informed)
