The local archive I have mentioned covers Bethnal Green, however not St Pancras. They have very good coverage of the East London Advertiser, which are full of stories of accidents, suicides, inquests and crimes, the vast majority of which involve the poor working class families of the East End. I think that the Guildhall Library in the City of London would cover the St Pancras/Kings Cross areas, or of course libraries local to the area. If you can tell me exactly the 'who, what and when' I would be happy to look it up for you when I next go. The areas covered would roughly be Stepney, Hackney, Poplar, Bethnal Green, Shoreditch, Mile End, Hoxton, Whitechapel & Spitalfields. Rgds, Jeanne

Hi Jeanne, Two of my families were from London, mainly West Ham, Bethnal Green, Pancras areas. The Gilberts were from West Ham, I've not got very much on them yet, still at the Grandparents and Gr Grandparents. Late 1800's early 1900's The Scully's were in London in the mid to late 1800's living in Pancras and Bethnal Green. Helen

Whereabouts in London ? I will be going to the Bancroft Road Library in East London in the next couple of weeks, and often look at their newspaper archives. The old East London papers are full of stories about unfortunates. I also use a web site, although it is limited for the years it covers I have found a few bits about my family. Hi Folks, well you're probably all in bed right now so Good Morning! I want to start finding more of the 'flesh' to fill out my trees branches. you know the real nitty gritty of how my ancestors lived and died not just when and where. From what I've found most were the lower working class, some ended up in the workhouse etc. Would there even be obits or anything else mentioning the poor or was it strictly the wealthy that got publicaly discussed? I'm in the states so I can't visit and search through the local paper archives anywhere but I'd like to try and find any obits, or articles or anything (see I don't even know what I'm looking for) that would give me more insight. Obviously there would be newspapers but what else can I look for? so I've 3 questions. 1/ What should i be looking for? I know about looking for wills but that's about it. 2/ where should I look? my ancestors came from London, Sussex and Ayr,Scotland. 3/ How should I search? I can google but I've not been turning up anything. I've got my eye trained on ebay for old local newspapers etc but what else can I do? Write to places? but then i don't know where. I know this is a lot of questions but I'm trying to learn and really don't know who else to ask. I'm sure others could use hints and tips in this direction too. Helen
