Basford is definitely the Nottingham one. Most of my ancestors were registered there, me too! It is a tiny suburb of the city. It does take in lots of places in Derbyshire too.

This might be useful - if you do search on the Genuki gazeteer it comes up with these places: County OS Grid ref Place Nottinghamshire SK540430 Basford Nottinghamshire SK550420 New Basford Nottinghamshire SK550430 Old Basford Shropshire SO390850 Basford Staffordshire SJ850460 Basford Staffordshire SJ990510 Basford Green The Grid references are links to a variety of maps. http://www(.)genuki.org(.)uk/big/Gazetteer/ I tend to go straight to the gazetteer now if I am trying to find out about a place - you can look at maps to show nearest places as well as finding out how far apart places are when you are trying to decide if families could/might have travelled that far!! Errol, I'm sure that is true, but the Basford that is a registration district is definitely in Nottingham! Kate.

Was it a church marriage? Cheshire BMD (http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/) have covered this for Nantwich: Church or Chapel ~Start of Marriages ~Registers at ~Code ~Years indexed Nantwich, SS. Mary & Nicholas ~1837 ~Cheshire Central ~138 ~1837-1950 Christine

Grandpa Jim, Basford is not a made up place, but as it is now effectively part of Nottingham it is unlikely to appear as a separate town on your road atlas. Kate.

Hi Sheila, The Basford in Cheshire comes under Nantwich Registration District if that helps. http://cheshirebmd.org.uk/genuki/REG/districts/nantwich.html Sam x

How peculiar that it isn't in my AA Road Atlas, unless its one of those places which doesn't actually exist like 'Teesside' and 'Tyne & Wear'. Just made up as a Registration District.

There is a Basford Green in Staffordshire. I would suspect a possible mis-transcription of Barford. Just to be awkward there is one in Norfolk, one in Warwickshire, a Barford St John and a Barford St Michael in Oxfordshire and a St Martin in Wiltshire.
