Kate, That's my next port of call - I have worked from the Coventry Family History Society's transcriptions - later entries (for 1800 on) have some additional info like 'Weaver of Bell Green'. Mark |

Mark, have you looked at the actual parish register entry for the marriage, or just the transcription on the IGI? Because there might be more information in the parish register than there is in the IGI. Kate. |

Good idea Jennifer - I'll do that. Gwyneth, the will idea is great - the Carpenters (Carpenders) seem to have been in Foleshill longer - I'll look into them. The Dudleys stayed put in Foleshill from that date until late last century (may still be some there of course!), but I'm not sure where they came from - there are Dudleys in Coventry itself and in Allesley, but I'm not sure how to tie any suspects in to my Thomas? Does the marriage entry for Thomas and Mary suggest a parish for him? Wills can help too. Look at CARPENTER ones as well as DUDLEY. Sometimes you will find a gem such as... ... to my daughter Mary, now wife of Thomas DUDLEY, a weaver from Birmingham' ( made up info. but I've seen things along those lines) Is DUDLEY a common name in that area.? If not, focus on nearby parishes where it does feature. Good luck, Gwyn |

You need to start searching the neighbouring parishes, gradually widening the circle. Qiute often you will find they were within a twenty mile radius. Jennifer |

From parish records and IGI I have got my main line back to the marriage of Thomas Dudley and Mary Carpenter in October 31st 1757. After that they are mostly well behaved and seem to have settled in Foleshill and most are involved in weaving. Although I have Mary's birth in the Parish registers I can't find anything more about Thomas in Foleshill, so I wonder if he is an incomer. Can anybody suggest a way to work out where he may have come from please? Mark |
