Hi i am trying to help my grandads wife with her adoption. She was born in 1955 and when she was 3 months old she was adopted. I advised her to get hold of her adoption papers and see what it states on there. There are both her parents names i have her bm date of birth and i have her fathers age. It also states where they lived when she was born. We would like to trace her mother and father now how would we go about this? many thanks Jen

Blimey - that makes me feel old - your GRANDADs wife is little older than me!! I'd start with what you have, an address in 1955, and check Elec rolls year by year and see if and when they left that house. Then, I'd look on B4u for the right name combinations, firstly in the right area , then widen the search if i havent tracked them. Bear in mind , they may be dead, or he may have died and her remarried , you may need to consider that. Were they married in the first place? *PHEW* pauses for breath... jess x

Hi Jess don't worry my grandads wife is the same age as my dad that is why i never call her grandma. I think from what i can make of what she has told me that he was a long distant lorry driver and he doesn't know that she even exists. So they never married. It says on there his age so hopefully i should be able to trace a birth on BMD. I will have a look at the electrol roll and see what i can find (as long as it is online). Thankyou for your help Jess. Hi Jess i'm not sure if she has her birth cert i'll give her another ring. All i know is that on the adoption cert it says that he is a long distant lorry driver. Would it make a difference? Thanks Jen

Hi Jess i have just spoken to her and she is confused as she has a few pieces of paper she also has the receipt for her adoption, she is going to try and copy them all and bring them round for me in the next week. So fingers crossed we may find out some more info in the next few days. Regards Jen

Hi... Do you mind if I jump in :-) Adoption certificates don't have the name of the birth parents on it ... Only the name of the adoptive parents. Full Adoption certs for 1955 would only show: No of entry Date and country of birth of child Name and surname of child Sex of child Name and surname, address and occupation of adopter or adopters Date of adoption order and description of court by which made Date of entry (onto the Adopted Children Register) Signature of Registrar. Jennifer it sounds like your 'granny' has been given other information about her births parents. I understand that it was probable that adoptive parents were given some information about the birth mother and her circumstances ... they may well have known her original birth name so she could be registered with the family doctor and to enable the adoptive parents to fill out the papers to apply to the court for an adoption order. If 'granny' hasn't already got her original birth certificate she needs to apply for it. With the information she has already got she can check out the births. Ancestry(.) co(.) uk is a free search site. She'll have to undergo the mandatory counselling process as that's the law for all pre 1975 adoptions if she wants to apply for her adoption file. Hope this has helped 'Good on yer' for helping your dear old 'granny' Cheers Gerry
