Hi Richard Thanks for your advice, all the children I have found all have Mother's Maiden Name down as Montgomery. I was just hoping I had overlooked it and some smart person on here could see it where I have failed. thanks again janey

Did you get the Montgomery surname from the mother's maiden name shown against the children's births? If you've been through the marriage index and haven't found a Hugo/Montgomery marriage, then maybe consider the possibility that the spouse was not a Montgomery at the time of marriage (e.g. a widow remarrying). Are there any likely-looking Charles Hugo marriages in the right area & time-frame? If so, cross-check the spouse surname to get her full name, then look to see if there was an earlier marriage for her. Alternately, you might find it easier to buy one of the children's birth certs - this would state whether the mother was previously married or not (something like: ''XXX Hugo, late YYY, formerly Montgomery'').
