thanks joy - I cannot get to grips with the overseas section on 1837 online, wasted a lot of money trying to get it to work (don't like that site anyway). put a thread on records office, and nudged it twice ( a couple of days later and another two days after that) but nobody offered.

Hi Tom You can check the overseas section for free on the familyrelatives website. You have to register but don't need credits for that part Sylvia

Thanks for that Sylvia. Have PMd you Gill, thanks for your offer. (I will let you know if I find anything tonight and save your credits!) Could someone tell me how I search, it doesn't seem to be working. I have the birth/baptism cert for Florence Georgina Gordon Kerr (kerr surname, not double barreled born in 1879 in Ranikhet, India.) and i am assuming that if I can find that in the index I will know where to search for the reference for her mother (born in the same place) but I cannot find it - can anyone help? Mothers name was Olivia Newbury Jannaway daughter of James Jannaway and Sophia Ann Abbott and was born c1852 (have Scottish death cert.) Thanks, tom.
