TNA 1901 census - does anyone know?

I sometimes use the TNA 1901 census search, because it lists occupations on the results screen, which can reduce the time taken looking for a particular person. HOWEVER.....on TNA you have to enter at least two characters in the surname field when searching. It would seem this is the case even when the person is on the census with their initials only!!! Is there a way to search on TNA where only one character is transcribed for the surname, or are all the people listed this way a closed book via this site? I hope someone knows how to do it!! Happy Hunting - Merry x

HI I have just had a play around on the Official 1901 census site to se what you were talking about. I found that a full first name and one initial as you say doesn't work. but if you try just initials for both first and surname then it does, weird or what. but I suppose that if you know the area that you expect them to be in and poss* occupation then you have a head start. But that's only my experience, Wendy
