Oh how funny!! It didn't occur to me to look under his actual NAME in 1901, as he ''couldn't be found''!! Is that him? Retired frame maker.....a widower!!! Maybe we need to check how many Ed Jacobs there are in 1891? Merry |

oops, sorry Val!! Maybe he was in an institution for a long time and so people assumed she was a widow? There are a few E J's who could be him in 1901, but no E C J's Merry |

I have been unable to obtain a death certificate for my great-great-grandfather, Edward Thomas Jacobs. He appears on the 1841, 51, 61, 71, and 81 censuses. He was born about 1829 in Shoreditch and was a cabinet maker. In 1881 he was living in Green Street, Bethnal Green with his son, William Thomas. Both were married although their wives were not there. Edward's wife, Susannah was a boarder in St Stephen's Road, Poplar. In 1891 she was living with her son, Edward Henry and his family in Hackney Wick. I did find Edward C. Jacobs, a cabinet maker aged 60 living at a different address in Hackney Wick. I could not find him on the 1901 census although Susannah was still living with her son and described as married. By the time of her death in 1906 she was described as the widow of Edward Jacobs, a journeyman cabinet maker. I have checked the index of deaths from 1891 to 1906 and have not found any record of his death, although I did apply for two possible certificates - both not the right person. Can anyone suggest where I might look - was it possible for someone to die without a record being made. Presumably his family knew of his death by 1906. |
