I have recently paid to search Birth and Marriage records on another website. However all they provide you with is a copy of the index page with a list of names. Without them providing further details of the parents etc., can anyone advise how this information can be usefull ?

The information is only useful in that it gives you the reference number for the GRO, which will enable you to order the certificate. There are many FREE ways of getting this information(the index number) - you do not have to pay for it! OC

what site did you use and how much did you pay? You can get that info for nothing on the internet. Deb

James the BMD's index's give you the GRO numbers you need to order certificates. Without the numbers certificates will cost about £11 if you have the numbers certificates are only £7. Georgina.

You can search BMD records free here: http://freebmd.rootsweb*com/cgi/search.pl (replace asterisk with dot) If you look at the coverage pages, you can see which years are covered. It starts in September 1837, and goes up to about 1910. For other BMDs, you can search free on Ancestry: http://www.ancestry*co.uk/search/rectype/vital/freebmd/bmd.aspx (replace asterisk with dot) You have to register, but it's free to search (you only have to pay to search the censuses). The Partial Indexes are the same as FreeBMD. The Complete Indexes contain all BMDs, but they take a long time to search, as you have to search the images quarter by quarter. As everyone else said, these indexes will give you the index number, which enables you to order the certificate. You may also be able to find details of parents on the censuses.
