Hi Maureen, Sorry I can't help you but my great grandmother died in Poplar Workhouse and it really saddened me to learn that but it was in the early 1900s. (I think) In her case it seems she outlived all her family and probably had no income to support herself when her son passed away. Aileenx |

Sorry - didn't notice the year you mentioned. I agree with OC, probably a hospital by that time. Kath. x |

Maureen This sounds vaguely familiar??? By 1942, Workhouses were not functioning as Workhouses in the old sense of the word, but were being used as longstay hospitals or residences for people who could not function in the outside world. It is very possible that the London Workhouse was evacuated during the war, and the residents sent anywhere in the country to other Workhouse/Institutions which had room. But if you google the name of the London Workhouse, you may find something to help you, including what records are available. OC |

I think most London Workhouse records would be kept at the London Metropolitan Archives (I know the records for Southwark are kept there). However I wouldn't have thought she would have been moved from a workhouse in London to one in Lancashire. Could she have moved to Lancashire for some other reason and found herself in poor circumstanses. Or could she have gone to the workhouse as a patient (most were used as infirmaries and maternity hospitals). I would have thought that the Lancashire workhouse would have been the best place to start looking to see if you can find the admittance register for the time. Have a look at this site:- http://www.workhouses.org.uk/ Kath. x |

1942? Is it possible she was evacuated to avoid the bombing? It wasn't only children who were moved. |

I have been trying to find out why my grandmother who came from London found herself in a Workhouse in Lancs (and it seems died there) It has been suggested that i go to the London Workhouses to see if any discharge registers of the period survive (1942) that would show a transfer. Help!! Where do i start!! |
