I have been given a task to find a nightclub run by my grandfather and his brothers about 1925 - 1929 ish. Have googled but found nothing. Does anyone have any idea where I can look please. Probably like looking for needle in a haystack but worth a go. Thanks Pam. |

Presumably he would have had to apply for a licensed victualler's license (I'm assuming it's a drinking club) so the relevant council would hold the records. If it's Westminster, the Westminster Archives may hold something. For the time being, why don't you give the A2A website a try.... key in his name and see what comes up. |

I doubt if you will find what you want online. Westminster Archives do have telephone directories and probably other London directories too, which might well list clubs, but how you'd know which was the right one, I don't know. The licence applications idea sounds good though. nell |

sorry to hijack your thread - but Paul and Nell, would people have had to have had licences back in 1800-1850, or could anyone run a pub, probably clutching at straws. |

Tom Licensing laws have been in force since before 1552! Licensing Act 1753 ordered that full registers of victuallers were to be kept by the Clerk of the Peace at Quarter Sessions. nell |

If the club was in Soho, the Soho Society may be able to help. They have a museum and archive. http://www.thesohosociety.org.uk/museum#past If you have a possible name for the club I can ask around. some soho-ites around here have very long memories and are also knowledgeable. It might help to reduce the search at Westminster Archives. Although on Westminsters open shelves I noticed a great row of books that someone had made ( bit like a scrap book) in each was an article on lots of licenced premises. Bit like an olden Time Out. |

Had a look at the list for London on Historical Directories, but there's nothing later than about 1915 for central London - 1917-9 for the suburbs. Christine |

Thank you all for replies. Have no idea on name of club at all. Will try and follow advice and let you know what happens. Thanks again. Pam. |
