Valerie, I have certs of all kinds. Some are photo copies of originals, some are hand written copies of originals( on these the writing is not flowery or' characterful'.) andsome are typed copies. M

Most of the London register offices won't supply certificates for family history purposes, so you may have to use the GRO. Kath. x

From some register offices you can get a photocopy of the original entry. From the GRO you get a photocopy of the first transcription that is sent to the GRO from the register offices - this is usually in old fashioned writing but all written out by one person and not original signatures of your ancestors. Some register offices type out the certificates when you order them. Some register offices write out the certificate at the time you order it. Kath. x

Usually the giveaway for a scan of an original document is the signature(s). As mentioned a GRO cert (or modern handwritten version) is all done by one hand,an original will be the work of more than one person. A birth/death cert would have the signature of the informant as well as the registrars handwriting for the main details. A marriage cert would have five or six original signatures. 1The groom 2The bride 3+4 The witnesses 5The clergy 6The registrar A GRO/Modern version would still have the names but all written by one person. If you want to see a scan of an original death cert let me know,(a 1943 cert signed by the wife of the deceased complete with a shaky emotional signature).Just pm your e-mail addy and i'll forward a copy. I think Edmonton comes under Enfield office Copy Certificates Finance and Corporate Resources Address: Enfield Register Office, Public Offices, Gentleman’s Row, EN2 6PS Phone number: 0208 379 1000 Procedure for requesting copies of certificates: birth, marriage and death If you wish to obtain a copy certificate for a birth, marriage or death that was registered in Enfield, you should apply by post or in person. You will need to provide the following information: • the type of certificate you are seeking: birth, marriage or death • the name or names the certificate applies to • the date of the event • the place of the event (*SEE BELOW *) • any other relevant information that may help us to locate the certificate • a stamped addressed envelope would be appreciated Fees The cost of all standard birth, death and marriage certificates is £7:00. We cannot issue a certificate until we have received payment. Cheques or postal orders should be made payable to London Borough of Enfield. Overseas applicants are asked to send sterling cash, by registered mail if possible, or a cheque drawn in Pounds Sterling currency. *I usaully find the offices will accept the name of the district if the place of the event is unknown, but it pays to supply all known info with the exception of the GRO reference.I always quote the district and quarter to narrow down the search for the staff.
