Next of kin can obtain, free of charge, military service records at the official military records site: http://www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/dd-214.html I’m afraid I’m not sure what one can get if you’re not next of kin as I only work with next of kin at the American Legion BUT this would be the place to find out.
