Can anyone please tell me if my GG Grandfather would be classed as a soldier or a sailor. He was a Royal Marine serving on born HMS Hague based in Ireland in 1860. I'm not sure whether to look for army records or naval records. Wendy |

Definitely Navy. And his records should be at the National Archives. If you know when he served, the ship's log will record daily life on the ship (mundane things like washing the hammocks mostly!) and pay records. Worth a trip to Kew just to handle thie oldd ledger which you will find absolutely fascinating. |

Thanks for that. Wish I could get to Kew, but I live on the Isle of Wight and it costs a fortune getting off the Island let alone go to Kew! Wendy |

Wendy would you like to give me his full name plus date and place of birth? I have an idea. |
