Hello Deb,I have been searching and found 2 children which indicate he married Elizabeth Colman,.I also found a John Weatherhead died in South Shields(the right age) in 1910. Both children had died by then as well.Oh dear I dont think I will look further, how sad. Thank you Deb for your reply Regards Sheila |

Hi sheila, Do you know the names of any children they may have had after 1913....that is when they started to record mothers maiden in the index...if you search for children of theirs after this date that would give you the mothers name... Deb |

Have found this website: http://www.southshields-sanddancers(.)co(.)uk/family_tree.htm (take out the brackets) It gives some transcription of marriages. Alternatively try googling the names or south shields +genealogy, you may just get lucky :) Good luck, Bex |

Looked at UKBMD and it doesn't look as though there is a local BMD site for South Shields yet (it seems to come under South Tyneside, and it doesn't look as if they have any online data yet.) Marriages Jun 1906 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- COLMAN Elizabeth S. Shields 10a 1446 Fergus William Paul S. Shields 10a 1446 Stephenson Emma Beveridge S. Shields 10a 1446 Weatherhead John S. Shields 10a 1446 I really do have to get off the computer in a minute, sorry. But these marriages between 1901 and 1911 are the most difficult. If you look through the birth register index from when mother's maiden name first appeared on the index (end of 1911, I think), perhaps you will find some surname / mother's maiden name pairs which sort the two couples out. Another way is to look for Emma's death under either surname, but most likely by the time she died they would only put in her middle initial instead of full middle name, and also most likely she will have died past when FreeBMD / Family Relatives go up to anyway, so it would be too much trouble searching. Another thing you could try is searching all the names to see if anybody has them on their tree on here to see if they can help (well, maybe not Elizabeth Colman, cos I bet there are loads of those.) Gotta go, Kate. |

Since the marriage is after 1901 then you will just have to buy the certificate I'm afraid. You only need the groom's name to order it. Kath. x |

Anyway, I have a feeling the kids are about to demand their go on the computer, but post the details up and I'm sure somebody will help. If the marriage took place in one of the counties that has its own BMD site, you may well be able to find it on there, and those sites tell you the actual spouse's name (except for Kent, but at least each marriage on there has its own number, so if you know the possibles you can find out) Look on www.ukbmd.org.uk to see if the county /area you want has its own BMD site (most are not complete, though, but most of them have done marriages first) Kate. |

Unfortunately you won't be able to find out who married who (or should that be whom? lol) under Ancestry. It just says who is on that page, so it could be either. Have you tried finding them in the census returns? Or have you any parish records online where you live? Or, you could try posting the details here and I'm sure some kind soul would try and help. I try and help but am usually too slow lol. Bex |

Sheila, if you put up the details perhaps we can help you sort it out. The reason for the same page numbers is that there are 2 marriages per page (4 per page in the early days of civil registration.) Kate. |

There can be up to four couples on a page and all have the same numbers. If the marriage is before 1901 then you can try to find your ancestor in the census and see who his wife is. After 1901, then it's more difficult to decide. What are the names and year of marriage? Kath. x |

Hi, I have found one of my relations marriage on freebmd. There were two couples only, so one of the ladies had to be his wife? I have searched the index on ancestry to see which one was his wife. But both ladies have the same numbers so how do I find out which he married? I thought each couple had their own numbers but all four have the same on this info,am I missing something? Thankyou all.
