I decided today that it might be a good idea to hide living relations in my tree. My tree is based on an imported GEDCOM file, and the file contains no dates or places for anyone living, but it does include names. However, changing the option in 'My Account Details' made no difference, and I guessed that the DOB had to be present for GR to know that the person was under 120 and still alive (!) Having imported a variant GEDCOM that does include all the dates, they are all still visible. Does the data need to have been entered via GR for this feature to work - it doesn't appear to work with imported trees?

Names and dates will still be visible on the search pages. Only when someone views your tree will the details be hidden from them (Not you)

Hmm. It's a bit like the light in the fridge, though, isn't it? How do I know that I'm the only one who can see that data? Actually, I have tried a test tree on a free account, and it does work, although you can still see dates of birth. I don't know which is worse: showing the name with no date, or showing 'Living Relation' with the correct date. Usually, you can use the search facility (often knowing the likely name from the context), or the GRO index to fill in the missing blanks in seconds. I would prefer it to show neither - just a place marker for the person - no dates, no places, no name.
