Thanks, Jess. It looks like Captain John Eastwood was cruising the Med when he should have been considering people like us and being 'cencussed'. Difficult though in a barge with 300 tons of coal on board. Must have been a good trip, my Ggrandfather Joseph didn't turn up again 'til he got married in 1886 but at least he became landlocked from then on. Thanks again for your efforts, Dave |

I got my last attempt at reveiving a thread a bit confused so I'll start again. Having traced my GGrandfather Joseph Eastwood to the 1861 Census (with lots of help from y'all out there) I'm now trying to find extra evidence but when searching in 1881 for the people in that 1861 census return (below), I can only find Thomas and the younger Mary. No doubt Joseph the elder has turned up his toes by this time but where did the rest of them go, i.e. the family of John Eastwood. Would some kind person have the time to see if they are in the 1871? I know that John Eastwood became a bargeman so maybe they were on the water when the census was taken. 1861 Census - Edited Transcript Civil parish: Howden Town: Barmby on the Marsh County/Island: Yorkshire Country: England Registration district: Howden Sub-registration district: Howden ED, institution, or vessel: 7 Neighbors: View others on page Household schedule number: 27 Household Members: Name Age Rel Born Joseph Eastwood 69 Head Beal, Yorkshire Mary Eastwood 38 Wife Barmby Marsh George Eastwood 2 Son Barmby on the Marsh John Eastwood 44 Son Barmby Marsh Mary Eastwood 44 D-in-law Barmby Marsh Thomas Eastwood 11 G/son Hemingbrough Joseph Eastwood 1 G/son Hemingbrough Source Citation: Class: RG9; Piece: 3564; Folio: 106; Page: 5; GSU roll: 543152.
