Can't Find Birth Record

Hi there, I'm knew to this as was wondering if I could get a bit of advice. I have found a listing on the 1901 census for Mary Hart age 23, Thomas Hart age 2 and William Roger Hart age 7 months. I think I have found Williams birth listing but I can't find Mary Hart or Thomas Harts listing anywhere. I've spent days trying to figure it out but its got me beat. What do you do when you roughly know when and where someone was born but can't find any trace of them? Many thanks for any help. Jo.

Can you post the details from 1901? Which area etc. Was Mary Hart married or single? Usually it's just a trawl through the complete birth index on Ancestry looking at every qtr. in every year round about the time you expect to find the birth (it's free to search). UPDATE - have found the 1901 entry now. Kath. x

Is Mary Hart her married name? If so you will need to look for the marriage certificate or one of the children's birth certificates to find her maiden name. Another possibility is that the first child was born before she married and registered under her maiden name. If she's not married - maybe she somehow managed to persude the father to register Thomas in his name? Maybe they are simply mistranscribed? Are you looking at the complete listing of births, or the FreeBMD part. That one is not yet fully transcribed so they may have been missed so far. These are just some posibilities! At least you have the one child's reference and could get the birth certificate for him. Anne

Mary Ellen Hart Year of Registration: 1878 Quarter of Registration: Apr-May-Jun District: Wolverhampton County: Shropshire, Staffordshire, West Midlands Volume: 6b Page: 6[680]8 (click to see others on page) looks to me like 628 or Mary Elizabeth Hart Year of Registration: 1879 Quarter of Registration: Jan-Feb-Mar District: Stourbridge County: Shropshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire, West Midlands, Worcestershire Volume: 6c Page: 194 (click to see others on page)

This looks like Thomas's birth reference:- Thomas Hart Dec. qtr. 1898, Atherstone, 6d, 476 Atherstone is very close to Bilston which is given as his birthplace on the 1901 census. Kath. x

The census listing states that Mary was a pauper so I'm presuming it was for the workhouse in Wolverhampton. It also states that Thomas was born in Bilston, Staffs. Hart was her maiden name and I could be barking up the wrong tree completely but I think she may have gone on to marry my Great Grandfather John Harriman in 1906, then went on to have a further 2 sons, John Harriman (my grandfather) and Joseph Harriman. Thanks for your replies. Jo.

That may well be her Georgina. I do know that her father was called Thomas Hart. If you find a few possibilities do you just have to buy certificates to find out which is the right one? Jo.

If you order the certificate online from the GRO you can give checking points (for example her father's name) and they will only issue the certificate if the father's name matches what you give them. The cost for the certificate (if it's the right one) is £7. If the father's name is different they do not issue a certificate and refund £4, so it costs you £3 for the check. Kath. x

Joanne it is always best to back up your finds with certificates, if you know who she went on to marry then get her marriage certificate because it will name her father & give you his occupation which you can cross check with the census. Georgina.

Georgina, I have the marriage certificate for John Harriman and Mary Hart. They married 29 July 1905, John was age 24 and Mary was 25 and the residence at the time of marriage for both was No. 1 Court, Charles Street. Thats how I found out her father was named Thomas. Am I right in assuming the next step is to find her birth certificate which will give me her parents names? Also how do you check census records after 1901 as this would confirm the names and ages of their children which would help me to find their births too. Jo.

Thanks Kath, I didn't know you could do that. I don't mind spending £3 but £7 is a bit steep if they are all wrong, especially as most of my relatives appear to be Jones!! Jo.
