I've lost an Eke! (Updated but still lost)

Hi, My wife's great grandfather was William Eke. He married Elizabeth Cole in Plymouth in about 1882 (Sorry Merry!). In 1881 he was living in the household of Elizabeth's father Henry Cole (transcribed as Harry) in Plymouth. He was born about 1861 so I can't find him on the 1861 census, and he doesn't appear on the 1871 although I have his birth in Sept qtr 1861. Any ideas? Mark

Would that be Elizabeth Cole and 1882, not 1884? Is he William henry at marriage and William Edward at birth? (Is that the one?) Merry

Hi Merry and Margaret. Yes Merry, he's the one and I'm afraid I put 1884 from memory! (not what it used to be) and Mabel is of course his daughter! I've rather done it again haven't I? Still can't find him in 1871 though and there aren't any other Ekes in Devon. Mark

Do you know if he's the son of James (from Norfolk in 1861 and from Plymouth in 1871!) and Sarah and that therefore he is just not listed with them in 1871 for some reason, or is it that you don't yet have the birth cert? Merry

UPDATE - I see James is from Woolwich, Kent in 1851! lol.....what's this......guess the place of birth?!! Merry

Merry - I'd just got as far as Norfolk when I saw your update. They really don't want me to find this lot do they - changing middle names, disappearing children and now movable places of birth! Mark

Merry, The only James Ekes I can find in 1841 of about the right age are all from Norfolk - do you (or anybody else) know if there was much evasion of the 1841 census? Or can I assume that one of them is James the elusive? Mark

Well, with my rellies who manage informative info from 1851 onwards, the 1841 is a complete minefield for Yes and No as to whether born in county. Maybe none of them knew what a county was?? Your bloke is reported as Norfolk again in 1881, though! Did he die between then and 1891?? Merry

Hi Merry, Sorry about the time-lag, I had to do some of that other stuff ... what's it called? Oh yes, work! Looks like he died 1883. I've sent off for William Edward's birth cert, but I'm still fascinated to know where he was in 1871. Mark PS Just googled William Eke, and he is the Nigerian chappy who wants to send everybody money in that famous email scam! So that's what he's been up to :0

I didn't know there was a population of Nigerians in Devon in the 1800's!! lol Merry

That would be Devon, Kent and Norfolk! Mark

I read this thread when you first posted it and paid no more attention until today when I saw references to Norfolk Ekes. I have Norfolk Ekes in my tree.... but there are others on GR who have far mor information than me - they just probably haven't seen this thread. I'll send a couple of PMs and bring your thread to their attention.
