Genealogy Chat

Since my last post I have received a message from another recent contact who assures me that she wants to share info. Great, thought I, but then she revealed she has been 'doing this' for only about two months and already has over 300 in her tree. She says she has got on so well because she went into LDS and downloaded everyone with her surname. Ugh! What do I reply? I'm losing the will to live. I thought when I started this over 3 years ago that I would meet similar minded people but I don't seem to. I read posts on here from wonderful sensible people who give great advice and who I wish I shared family with but all mine seem to be .............. can't say what I really think. Sorry, don't want to upset anybody but I've had an awful day. Jennie

If I received that, I would say something like...... ''Dear X, Wow, you have done fantastically well in such a short time!! Well done.....I can't wait to share the information you have. You have obviously been luckier than I with the IGI, as I have discovered quite a few entries did not check out when I cross-checked them with the original parish records.'' If you can check the IGI entries she will have looked at has submitted entries in it, you could ramble on about how so many of those you have checked have turned out to be complete fabrication......... Lay it on with a trowel and then say you can't wait to see her tree! LOL Merry

Oh Merry that's the first time I've laughed today. I feel better now thankyou. My contact has already opened her tree to me and she has rellies from mid 15c so she obviously has been working hard. Sarcasm - not good my mum told me. I must behave better. Jennie

Jennifer I know exactly how you feel. I can still remember the feeling of dawning disbelief that this Site was not what I had imagined it would be - lots of like-minded people who did careful research and werent satisfied with anything less than 99% proof (you can never get 100%, in my opinion). I got very angry (and still do if I let it get to me) about one branch of my tree. Seven people on Genes have this tree, all descended from the same woman who was the sibling of my 6 x GGF. Trouble is - this woman died aged 4!!! Its in the Parish Register (I know this because I have LOOKED at the Parish register, they obviously havent) Only one GR member out of the 7 has removed this faulty link - the rest are presumably happily passing it round the internet. I don't know what you do about this. I wish members could be starred one to five, showing how seriously they take their research, but no doubt that suggestion will heap scorn upon me for being a pedant. Still, I may be a pedant, but MY tree is as accurate as it is possible to make it. OC

Oh OC can I join my tree to yours? LOL You've said everything I feel. I've got a reputation in my family for doing everything to the nth degree but that is the way I am made. Your comment 'happily passing it round the internet' is what hurts me the most when it is my direct line. I have contacted several people and nicely requested they change info and backed it up with details but most don't bother so I don't contact people now. Looking forwards to having a better day tomorrow. Jennie
