Can I assume he was still alive?

I have the marriage certificate of my 2 X great grandfather dated 1841. His father's name and rank are given but unlike some other certificates I have where a father is shown as deceased if that was the case, this certificate doesn't. Is it likely that my 3 X great grandfather was still alive at the time? I doubt that he could have been as my gg grandfather was 62 at the time of his marriage but you never know! Pam

If the groom was 62 I would think it unlikely his father was still alive......in general vicar's didn't ask, so only if it was a registry office or non-conformist marriage (with a registrar present) would I be inclined to believe the info written (and even registrars got things wrong too!) I dare not click my back button to see what else you said, because the site is so slow. When you said the cert gives the father's rank, do you mean army rank? If yes, have you looked for an army record on The National Archives site? if not, what info is given on the cert about the groom's father? I can take a look for you. Merry

Thanks for the advice ozibird and merry. I meant to write ' rank or profession' of father, not rank!!! Given that my gg grandfather was born in 1779 and married for the second time in 1841 at the age of 62, then fathered at least 6 children before his death from Influenza in 1855 aged 76.............I was hoping that his father came from the same strong stock! Thanks again Pam
