Thanks everyone, I think the Newbury one might be it. Newbury is not awfully far from Aldershot, and I don't know where the bride's parents lived - maybe I can find out this way. The man was a Canadian soldier who was the best friend of my birth father.(also a Canadian soldier) My half-bro in Canada has sent me a picture of the wedding guests, that has me being held by my birthmother, with my birthfather standing with her. I thought that I was a few months old in the picture, therefore I thought it was 1944, but as babies were dressed as babies for longer at that time it could have been 1945 which would have made me 13 months. I needed the maiden name of the lady as my half-bro thinks that they were my godparents. Apparently I had a christening most likely in a Catholic Church as my father was Catholic. The reason for wanting to know all this, is that I had a full sister born in Sept.'45. We were sent to different families to be adopted and I cannot trace her. I thought she might have been christened too. I have e-mailed the Parish priest several times over the last two years, and have not yet managed to get an answer, only that the records are stored somewhere else and someone will look them up. I am still waiting. I don't know if I can trace my sister from this route, but anything is worth a try - posting almost daily on GR -as some of you may have seen - has not yet produced a result. The couple went to live in Canada, near to my birthfather. This is how my half-bro knew about the picture which hung on their wall and he was shown it and told 'that is your English sister. try to find her' The couple came back to England regularly to see the wife's family, and also looked for me when they were here. Adoption secrecy being what it was, of course they could not find me. Thank you for your help, I will search around for Marshalls Eileen |

Georgina's find seems likely. It is only about 30 or so miles from Newbury to Aldershot. Kath. x |

Eileen without at least first names it is very hard, did they have any children? There isnt an obvious marriage in 1944 but there is this one in 1945.. Frank M Waddell married Marion Marshall in the june quarter 1945 in Newbury ref no:2c-897. Georgina. |

I think the name is more likely to be Waddell (double D) as I can't find any marriages under Wadell in 1944. None of the Waddell marriages seem to be anywhere near to Aldershot, and none with the name Frank. Kath. x |

You need to look in the GRO marriage indexes, which are free to search on www.ancestry*co.uk It will only give the registration district, not the church (or register office etc) where the marriage took place. |

I am trying to find the maiden name of a lady who married a Canadian soldier whose surname was Waddell/Wadell. The marriage would have taken place somewhere near Aldershot, possibly in a Catholic Church. The date would be mid to late 1944. Eileen |
