Philip National censuses were indeed taken every ten years from 1801, but they were head counts only and are of no use to the family historian. Many towns and villages took censuses before this time too, for varying purposes - google to see what you come up with for your area. OC |

Yes they started then but not many survive. I have the 1821 census for a small, local town and it names head of house and occupation and number of occupants. Heather |

I was reading a book called Fashionable Brighton last night, written in the 1940's about Brighton from the 1800's - 1860's. In it they mention comparing the number of residence's from the 1801 census and every 10 years onwards to see how the town grew. Wait just one cotten picking minute....1801!! I thought they started in 1841. So was this countrywide or just in Brighton these earlier census'? Helen |
