You're right Dea... it was a hard life and although she led a dubious lifestyle, Charlotte managed to rear her family successfully, so she must have been a reasonably able Mum. I certainly wouldn't have wanted to live as she did in Portsmouth. Gwyn |

Yes Gwyn, but she was STILL a widdow, and she STILL had a tiny baby - even though she had conceived it elsewhere. Dea x |

Beware of those widows with young children- all is not always as it seems. In 1881 my great grandmother is a widow with a 3 month old baby. Luckily I already had my great grandfather's death certificate.... for 1876. Hmmm. Gwyn |

I found someone the other day on the census with a baby also 1 day old - Unfortunately, the mother was down as 'widdow' - aged 29, with 2 or 3 other children. Fortunately, she at least was financially O.K. - occupation 'manufacturer', and she could obviously afford a 'live-in nurse' to help with the children, but it made me feel SSSoooo sad, and grateful at the same time for the 'relatively' easy life that I have had.
