As a general rule, I think it best to start with what you definitely know and work back. To find out which Hannah is which, you would need to check the burial register for the first Hannah. Any children born after that date will be presumably ones belonging to the 2nd Hannah. nell |

Ann If you visit Hampshire Record Office in Winchester, they have long opening hours on weekdays. An hour or so after 5pm is very worthwhile as it's usually very quiet then and so much easier to get the required fiche etc. without having to wait. Gwyn |

I am hoping to get to the record office sometime to do some research on one branch of my family. as I will only have a couple of hors there I want to make the most of my time. Do all ROs need to be booked? I have only been to one once before over a year ago, I didn't book then but don't want to make a wasted journey. In the generation I a, 18th century, I have at least 12 John WARNERS all related one way or another. 7 are married and I have definite wives and families and occupations for them, Another one, a shoemaker, is married and I have a probable marriage for him, an Anne HATREE, also known as Hannah, who I think was also previously married to another Hannah (FRY) who died. 4 I do not have marriages for. My Gtx2 grandfather Robert gives John WARNER Labourer as his father. His Mother who is Hannah (I am almost certain JENNINGS) is a widow in 1851 and living with Robert, in 1841 she is 50 living in the same house as Marianne JENNINGS aged 95 who i believe is her Mother. there is no sign of John. I have found two likely John WARNERS who died in 1838 and 1848 and I have sent for their certs. The John WARNER (shoemaker)married to Anne (Hannah) HATREE died in 1865 aged 92 and I have his cert, I also have his wife's. Basically I am looking for which John Warner married which Hannah. (i.e.his parents etc) I am also looking for Hannah Jennings birth, who were her parents etc. I am also looking to sort out which child belonged to which John and Hannah. On the IGI there are 11children with the parents John WARNER and Hannah but I am almost certain they are from two families. By the 1841 Robert is married so i am unable to place him in a family. what information do I need to take with me to help in my search, what should I be looking for and where is the best place to look. What is the best way to record my findings? I have searched Ancestry Parish records for Hannah Jennings birth and somebody also searched parish records at the SOG for her birth (she was born in North Petherton according to all censuses. will the rO have other records - Independant church, Quakers etc? Any help at all would be much appreciated thanks. Ann Glos |

Ann, I've nudged up an earlier thread for you to look at from Jane in the Highlands - there are some good responses on there. I think there were a few other threads about visiting record offices as well but I didn't locate them so don't know if they've been deleted or I just didn't search properly - I'm sure if they are still about someone will put me right. Any other questions just shout. Snowdrops |

See below for my problem. I have read the visiting record offices thread and made notes of what to take, many thanks for that. But reading my problems what do you think i should look for first? Hannah's birth, try and trace which john married Hannah Jennings or try and see which children are with which John and Hannah? Although with the latter I anticipate that I won't be able to distinguish, any tips what to look for to put the children in different 'camps'? If I don't reply immediately I will come back but have to go out for an hour this morning. Thanks for all your help. Ann Glos |
