Gwyn in Kent

Gwyn in Kent Report 19 Aug 2006 19:48

Just adding to say that although it looks like Devon, I wonder if the place could be Downe, or the other word Seale. For Ladd.... could Lydd down near Dungeness be a possibility.? Gwyn

Thanks Helen, I think you must be right - it's the same address as in 1861. Don't know how you found them as they are down as Wheaton rather than Whitear! Well, it seems that my g grandfather had a brother William, who must have been born very close to him, or maybe even twins. Ann is stated as being married rather than widowed, but she is head of the family, no sign of hubby! It seems that she was born in a place called Ladd in Kent which I will do some research on now - so many thanks, I know a little more than I did this morning. Any further advice or help gratefully received.

Think I have found Ann in 1851 with a son William aged 19 HO107 1561 85 34 Place of birth looks like Dodd or Didd, Kent (can't find either!!!) which I think is probably the same place which looked a bit like 'Devon' in 1861. Could it be Deal?

Thanks for the responses, I don't have the marriage certificate of Thomas and Isabella (yes that is the right family Ozibird - the place of birth for Ann seems very strange, it seems to say Devon and Kent, and I can't find any place names like Siel in either county - any suggestions???) I can't find Ann in any other census although BMD suggests that she died in 1869 in Bermondsey. Kate - is there any way on line that I can check parish registers - I don't live anywhere near London any more so cannot easily go to the Metropolitan Archives which is where I believe they are kept - would St. Peter's Walworth records be anywhere else? Thanks again

Chris, if you can look at the actual parish record entry for Thomas's baptism (St. Peter, Walworth), it will very likely tell you the family's address or at least the area where they lived, and also his father's occupation. The IGI does not include all the information from the entries, but the standard baptism form for that time did have columns for this information so it should be there in the parish records. By the way, Thomas, Ann and William were among the top 10 names in those days, so it may not be significant that they keep cropping up! Kate.

Do you have William W's occupation from Thomas' marriage cert? Merry

Hello, I have come to a dead end while trying to trace my father's side of the family, and I was wondering if anyone can help me get past it. My G Grandfather was Thomas William Whitear, born in Walworth, London in 1831, baptised in 1832. I know about his wife and children, but cannot go back any further or find siblings. In the 1861 census it shows the family living in Hanover Street, London and at the same address there is a widow called Ann Whitear, aged 66 (making a birth year of about 1795) who I presume is his mother. Unfortunately, I cannot make out her place of birth. According to IGI, Thomas's mother was called Ann, and his father was William but no other information. Another GR member has family with this surname, from the same sort of area, intrigueingly the same christian names coming up over and over again but we cannot find the link. Maybe my William is a brother or cousin of her relatives and we are on different branches from that point. Does anyone have a way of looking up parish records that could confirm for me the names of Thomas's parents, and/or siblings? Thanks for any help you can give. Chris
