Why would the 'index ref' number on a birth record

Hi, I am just starting the search for my birth mother and have been looking up the birth records for her brothers and sisters. I found all of them no problem, but on each record the index reference number has been crossed out and a new one written alongside it. Could any one tell me what this means ? Thanks :)

Were they adopted? Georgina.

I thought it might be because they were adopted, so i checked my own birth record as i am adopted myself......there was no amendment against my entry though and one of the sisters was only born the year before me, so i presume that the procedure would have been the same. I'll keep checking back for replies and if no luck, i will try and find out from the registrar of the district involved. Many Thanks

Hi Maxi xx They were prob adopted as my dads was crossed out but his younger sisters wasnt (and she was also adopted as i now have her birth cert and it says the same on both of them Adfopted)

Thanks for the replies.....i think adoption is the most likely explanation but i will check any way to make sure. I have only just started this search and already it is complicated.........when i was born, my birth mother had already taken her stepfathers surname which i also inherited. Her brother was living with her birth father.....neither of whom i can trace at present as i don't know the surname. Her half brothers and sisters now appear to have been adopted also, so there names will also have changed......... So the search continues................ Maxi xx

I've always assumed this meant there was a name change or adoption. For most instances it seems to be where the mother was unmarried. Rose
