Hi, I am just starting the search for my birth mother and have been looking up the birth records for her brothers and sisters. I found all of them no problem, but on each record the index reference number has been crossed out and a new one written alongside it. Could any one tell me what this means ? Thanks :) |

I thought it might be because they were adopted, so i checked my own birth record as i am adopted myself......there was no amendment against my entry though and one of the sisters was only born the year before me, so i presume that the procedure would have been the same. I'll keep checking back for replies and if no luck, i will try and find out from the registrar of the district involved. Many Thanks |

Thanks for the replies.....i think adoption is the most likely explanation but i will check any way to make sure. I have only just started this search and already it is complicated.........when i was born, my birth mother had already taken her stepfathers surname which i also inherited. Her brother was living with her birth father.....neither of whom i can trace at present as i don't know the surname. Her half brothers and sisters now appear to have been adopted also, so there names will also have changed......... So the search continues................ Maxi xx |

I've always assumed this meant there was a name change or adoption. For most instances it seems to be where the mother was unmarried. Rose |
