Unfortunately my house isn't old - only built 1970. But the road is old (at least 100 years), its a main road over a mile long. So I don't know if my house number would be the same. Any ideas how to get started? I would like to know what was here before 1970. Especially as Edith Nesbit apparantely lived a couple of doors away. Thank |

A local library, local history society or archives office might be the place to start. If the property is only 30-40 years old you might find something via the planning office or local authority. The local paper might be worth contacting too, there might be someone who remembers the area from the time. Glen |

Hi, my house isn't very very old (it was built 1896) but I have looked it up on the 1901 census. I also know people who were born in another house a few doors up from mine who lived here during the war and knew all the people who lived in the street and told me their histories. I also know the people who I bought this house from 15 years ago lived here for over 20 years. So all in all I have a good idea of who lived here and what the house was like and how it's developed. Sorry it's not exciting though!! |

Thanks for that - a trip to the library is in order. How lucky knowing about your street in the war, I'm jealous. Selena |

If you own the house you can copies of the deeds from your building society or solicitor depending where they are stored. These usually go back to the first owner with a bit of luck. Pauline |

Thanks Pauline, what a twit I am - I have copies here because I queried some council maintained boundaries before we bought it. What an excellent starting point. Off to bed now, thanks for the ideas, Selena |

If you own the house, have you checked your deeds? The history will be on there. Anne |
