I have a number of rellies christened at the Old Meeting House Independent, Buckingham. Does anybody know what domination the meeting house is. I ask, because I am trying to keep up with the many religions that make up my colourful family. Will check later as I am off to work-thanks

I always used to think that Meeting House meant it was Quakers. However my Great grandparents married in the Maulden Meeting House, Bedfordshire. I know for certain they were Methodists and also the marriage cert says 'Protestent Dissenters'. The Meeting House in Maulden is not traceable now - I have enquired at the Bedford Record Office - however I did find the minister who married them recorded on the census which confirmed where it was (the marriage was in June 1861 , luckily!) If it is a record of baptism, it will not be Quakers. They recorded births. It is one of the other non-conformist groups. Jay

I think a 'meeting' house could be for any 'non conforming' Christian religion, Quaker, Methodist or Wesleyan etc. It definitely won't be Catholic or C of E. Have you tried googling it ? You might find more details. My ancestors married in the independent meeting house in Hemel Hempstead , they were members of the Salvation army later , but I think started of as Methodists. Kim

Lynda Did you realise that until 1933 Methodists came in several flavours? Wesleyan and Primitive were the main ones but there were other smaller sects. The Salvation Army's founder, General Booth, was born a Methodist. J

Also, John and Charles Wesley were Angicans. Methodism as a separate denomination was started by their followers. Anne
