Mary Thank you very much for the time and effort you've put in on my behalf. I'll continue to look through the sites you suggested, and have a look at the suggestions from your thread on Records. As he took on his mum's husband's name - I guess I'll have to check for Jackson's as well. This should keep me occupied for some time. Barbara |

Sorry, it was his place of birth I meant. I've had a look on a few Australian sites, but drawn a blank so far. There are lots of Robert Dodds, but no Robert Codnor Dodds, and none of the others are obviously connected with yours. If he died in NZ I wouldn't expect to find him on Australian BMD sites unless he remarried there. I checked Victoria, WA and NSW, which are online, anyway, but didn't find him. There's an Australian government site that lists WWI and WWII servicemen and their next of kin, and I thought I might find him there, but there's no obvious candidate. This is the site if you want to look for yourself: http://www.naa.gov.au/The_Collection/recordsearch.html There's a thread I started on the Records Office board called Passenger Lists which contains quite a few Aus/NZ lists, which you could try. |

Thanks for that Mary Not sure if your asking for his or his mother's place of birth. He was born in Stamfordham, northumberland. His mother's name was Mary Ann Jackson. Father unknown. (Reg District Castle Ward) His mother was born in Sunnyside, Durham. His wife's name was Ada and his daughter was called Betty (but that might be the wrong way round). He is on the 1901 census as Robert C Dodds, living in Ingoe, northumberland. On the 1891 he's at the same address - but as Robert C Jackson Barbara |

NZ BMDs aren't online, but you can search cemetery records here: http://nzgenealogy.rootschat.net/cemetery.html What were his parents' names and place of birth? |

Thanks for those Christine. I'll give them a try. The name is a bit unusual - Robert Codnor Dodds (as given on the 1901 or surname Jackson (as per birth registration). ... Interesting - there is a Robert C Dodds married in the right district in 1911, but the other names showing up don't match. Just another bit to add to the puzzle Barbara |

If you know the names and either they're unusual, or you're determined, you could trawl GRO images for marriages &/or deaths? Passenger manifests? Oz/NZ genealogy sites? Christine |

I'm guessing he was married BEFORE he emigrated - as the widow came back here. As he was born abt 1884, this would give a date of emigration as 1905 or later. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Barbara |

According to family legend my great uncle emigrated to Australia and then went on to New Zealand. He died out there, in about 1922, and his wife and daughter came back to England. All ideas appreciated. Barbara |
