The main organisation involved with this, and they have a website, is Shot at Dawn.

That was the main artical about this in newspaper, was very upsetting to read. That poor lad was ill and they brushed it straight under the carpet. All they were interested in was that he didn't do what he was supposed to do and punished him and his family for it. It must of been extremely devasting for them to know that their child was ordered to be shot by his own army men. Nicola

I have just been reading in the newspaper about soldiers that were excuted for desertion in world war 1 and 2 have now finally been given a pardon. One incident is listed in a small paragraph saying: Shot on January 5 1917. historians believe he may have been made a scapegoat by officers who were keen to show that not only squaddies faced execution for desertion. He was the son of a merchant Navy Reserve Officer. He became lost for more than 24 hours behind the font line and fell out with a fellow officer. The 21 year old was found guilty of cowardice and desertion. This lad was a Sub-Lt. How sad is that, it lists a few others that were also shot for desertion. I thought that if a soldier in those times were shot for desertion, then it wouldn't be listed as such. Also if that is the case and they were listed, is there a website that would list all the soldiers that were shot for desertion? Lastly has anyone come accross one of their relatives had been shot for desertion? Nicola
