Hi I have found a marriage for my 4x Great Grandparents on the IGI it took place in 1836 in Prescot, Lancashire. As this is before civil registation, Does anyone know where I can get a copy of the marriage certificate. Would the Manchester library section have it?? Also would it include their parents names any ideas on where to go and if you have to go in person will help. Thanks a lot Karen

To be honest karen, I didn't think you could get marraige ceritificates before the civil registration as they are not logged at the registry offices. I think that parish records is the only place that you would find the information. I know it would give the father occupation but I don't know if it would give the mothers. Nicola

There will be no marriage certificate before 1837 just a copy of the parish records, some parishes include the fathers names & some only name witnesses. Georgina.

HI Karen Try either Prescot or St.Helens libraries, I think that would be your best bet. LOL, Barbara in Suffolk. Origianally from St Helens.

Karen, I just thought I should mention in case you don't know that some entries on the IGI are taken from parish records - they will have the exact date of the marriage and the full names of the people who got married, and at the bottom 'extracted from local records' or something like that - but some entries are added by people doing their own family tree or guessing from census records or something like that, and they will often have a date 'about' then the year, bride's surname may be missing, and it will say 'record submitted by a member of the LDS church' or something like that. If the one you have found is the second kind, then the marriage may not have taken place in Prescot in 1836 at all. But if the first kind, then the Lancashire record office should be able to find it in the parish records. Apologies if this is all old hat to you! Kate.
