West Bromwich is split as follows South West, which has 26 districts North East, which has 23 districts, plus the Workhouse and West Bromwich district schools. You could check the description images to see where it might belong. Or you could try the NA website and type 'house history' in the search box. Thinking about it,wouldn't a death cert give a road name? Glen |

I got the address from their grave stone (see my thread what can I do to claim this family) I was thinking that as they bothered to put the address on it must have been a status symbol. unfortunately they both died in 1880 and I was trying to find out if maybe other members of the family were still living in it. Their address from the 1871 census is totally different so no luck there. Thanks anyway Linda x sorry Glen I'm being a bit thick today |

The top of the census image will give you the parish details. In order the details from the 1881 are 1,Civil Parish 2,City or Municipal Borough 3,Municipal Ward 4,Parliamentary Borough 5,Town,Village or Hamlet 6,Urban Sanitary District 7,Rural Sanitary District 8,Ecclesiastical Parish So it will show the parish you are looking at somewhere. Where have you got the address from - do you have it on another census? If so, go to that census and go backwards and forwards a couple of pages until you find a nearby street name - then do the 1881 search on that street name and you should be able to find that street and the address you are looking for nearby. You do the direct 1881 on ancestry,my method also works on ancestry. If you have the previous or following census year image, look at the top of the screen for (example shown) 'you are here,uk census collection,1871 England Census, Norfolk,Norwich,District 31' If you click on the 'Norwich' a list of districts appear, select the number of the district you are looking at (eg 31) and it gives a description of the district, and names the streets within it. You can then check the same district in different census (see if the same streets appear) and check the same area of a district through each census. Glen |

You can do it on Ancestry For example - go to 1881 search, looking for Cook Street, Salford - I put in Lancashire as the area, Salford as the Parish and Cook Street in the address box - This then takes you to the street and it was a matter of going through the pages. Let me know if you have any problems. Dea x P.S. when I put '10 cook street' it didn't take me to it, but thereagain, there might not have been a No. 10 as I just made up the address to try it for you. - It's a matter of finding the right combination to search. |

My method will work for 1851-1901,via the census but it's a bit longwinded. If you have the details of the Parish and district number it can be done, but if the district is a large one it can be awkward. Glen |

1881 is the only census where you CAN actually do this - just enter the address in the search facility. Dea x |
