My grand father's surname was Szefer, and he was a POW in Poland, I have recently heard that most of his family were in Auswitch, is there any way of checking if this was prodominantly a Jewish name or what the origin of the family? Thanks, Bev |

Thanks Gill, the surname seems to be listed in the site, strange, I have only just found out about my ancestors being in Auswitch, and so many people over the years have asked me if I have Jewish connections, I have spent time travelling and people have approached me speaking Hebrew! Take care, Bev |

You could search the Yad Vashem database of Holocaust victims. |

It looks as if it ought to be the equivalent of Schaeffer (Shepherd). Christine |

HI Christine, referring to your acquaintences Mother, I am glad that it gave her that strength of character, unfortunately, my Grandfather turned to alcohol believing that all of his family died in the holocaust, 15 years ago he was sat in a pub chatting to a complete stranger who kindly researched my Grandfathers routes and found living sister who had survived, they were reunitied. Unfortunately, both have died. x |
