What sort of information would be present on a Death Certifacte from the 1840's/1850's?

Just: Full name of deceased Date of death Place of death Given age Cause of death Occupation (or name and occupation of husband if the deceased was a married or widowed woman) Name, address and family relationship (if any) of the person who reported the death. ???

A big sign saying this is the correct certificate perhaps? Wasn't sure what you got you see, but I can just put occupation or address down as checking points when I order it

Unless you know for certain they died in their own home, address could be a stumbling block. Jay

I'd agree with Janet. My gr grandfather committed suicide by poison - he died in Guy's Hospital but the address used for him was his work address - presumably where he took the stuff! Occupation or a rough idea of age might be better. Jill

well I'm hoping he did - he seemed to spend twenty/thirty odd years in the one property...unless he decides to spite me even more by dying elsewhere

I wouldn't put checking points on a death certificate unless you are absolutely certain of the facts.He may not have died at home (could have been an infirmary), and if you put his occupation (for example carpenter but the informant called him a Joiner) then the GRO wouldn't send the certificate, even if it was the right one. ... and don't forget that they could have changed occupation not long before they died. Same with address. Kate.
