Can I just say, as there seems to be some confusion: Hugh Wallis Site is merely a convenient doorway into the IGI records. Hugh Wallis site does not have any records, it is a list of church registers which have been transcribed by/on the IGI. Its usefulness is that it cuts out all the submitted entries and also gives you a handy list of churches so that you know which church record you are looking at - something the IGI rarely does. Hugh Wallis is by no means complete and it has not been updated for five years. So if you don't find what you are looking for via Hugh Wallis, then you also need to search the IGI by using the IGI search page on the LDS site. Phew! Does that make sense? OC

As Price is derived from Ap Rice (or Ap Rhys) ie son of Rice, then it is entirely possible that the two names are used interchangeably. You would need to look at the original register for additional comfort, but even registers are merely interpretations, particularly if those named were illiterate.

I found an IGI record for a marriage between George MAY and Matilda Starke. I was looking for a George CRAY and Matilda Starke. It was the right area & time-span. When the original PR was checked, it says CRAY quite clearly. The IGI entry is a transcript of the actual PR, not a member-submitted entry. So I'd say its worth looking at the original. As for Birth certificates being incorrect... I recently made contact with a fourth cousin - our common ancestor is in the parish registers as Hawkin, and appears on two census as Hakin. My contact hadn't got further than her gt grandmother - a birth & marriage for a HAGAN with 2 of her brothers births also registered as HAGAN. She'd been told she had Irish ancestry. I think I've managed to prove to her that her James HAGAN is James HAKIN on the 1841/1851 censuses. His marriage is indexed as HAKEIN. And he's from Yorkshire, not Ireland.

Jen, I can easily imagine misreading 'Rice' as 'Price' if the R looks like a capital P and then a lower case r. I would suggest having a look at the actual parish register entries to see what it looks like to you. Hugh Wallis is just a kind of index to the IGI, so can't be taken as confirmation of something that is on the IGI. Kate.

If it was a toss up between parish register recording surname and birth reg I'd go for the parish reg interpretation as the vicar would have known the surname from his dealings with the parishioners whilst the registrar could have misheard the one time he heard the name. This still holds true for IGI entries as long as there are several Price entries for that family and they are extracted records from the registers. If its a one off, or a submitted entry it could be way off. But as said above you need to check the original registers. Have you tried saying the name out loud to see if Price could have been heard as Rice - eg if it was Philip Price , it comes out sounding like Philip Rice when I say it.

Generally speaking, a birth cert is accurate, far more accurate than IGI. But I say generally speaking because I have a Mary Olley Nunn, (definitely her correct name - Olley being her mother's maiden name) and quoted as Olley on her marriage and death certificate, but down as Mary ELLEY Nunn on her birth certificate! .................. So I've probably been no help then, lol! Bev x

The IGI is only a transcription and prone to errors. Check with the original parish records to see what they say. I never take anything the IGI says as gospel I have found it wrong too many times. Gwynne

If a distant family name is given/interpreted as Price (born 1770)on LDS and Hugh Wallis.................yet, it is found (as a given middle name) to a grandaughter on her birth cert as RICE................which one is more trustworthy please does anyone know?...................... It was also interpreted as RICE on at least one census!......... My main problem with this, is that there are hundreds of the name Price/Pryce, but I have found nothing for RICE! So can not get further back with this name i.e, find parents for the above person!...................... It could be any number of Price's..........And as I have found nothing under Rice.........I am beginning to believe that an error in interpretation was made.............is there any other way in which I could find out please?.................
