Second word certainly 'burner'........reserving judgment on the first word...........but not 'coal' First letter of first word is 'G'........see 'Gas Fitter on next page of census.............. Reg |

Yes, I think it is Gleed. According to an old dictionary, it means a burning coal or a fire or flame. Seems an odd occupation, though. Bedtime for me too! |

Thanks for that Sue, I was just wondering about 1881, but on pay per view ..... grateful you told me it's not worth it. Now is he too young in 1861 to have the same occupation .... Trouble is he really only comes into the picture in 1871, 'cos in that census g2grandfather is living with his daughter and family, of which Eli is the head. But I unknowns bug me!! Mavis |

Looked a that site Reggie, don't know if it's me, but I couldn't see how to follow the thread to see if there was ever an answer. Have also tried couple of 'occupations sites' to no avail. Thanks to all those who looked on other census years. Suspect it's not a very skilled job, looking at his other occupations! Suspect unless an expert in coal mining terms or whatever reads the thread we've all got as far as we can go. Thanks one and all, and I think it's 'goodnight from me ....' Mavis |
