Thanks for that Lancashire Coal Mines link, Kathleen, my g2 grandfather was a Lancashire coal miner and I'm just writing him up in detail. Very timely. Mavis |

In 1881 he is 'Striker to Blacksmith', whatever that is. Not got time to look at the 1901 now, though. I must go to bed! Night night. Kate. |

Nicola, on the 1891 Thomas is not a coal miner / collier, it is his sons who have that occupation. As for what Thomas's occupation is, it looks like 'Boat Emptier'??? Unfortunately there is something scrawled over it which makes it pretty difficult to read, and there is a word before 'Boat' which looks as if it is crossed out. Or maybe it is 'Boot' something, which seems more likely? Kate. |

I think what you are seeing is the occupation 'collier', and the enumerator has added in front of this when he was checking the entries 'coal m', meaning 'coal miner'. Kath. x |

On the 1891 census for Thomas Boustead, born Carlisle c1844 his occupation is down to what seems to be Coal M Collin, I was thinking that this meant Coal Mine Collery. The family were living in Failsworth, Prestwich, Lancashire. My father used to work in coal mine, which they called collery so was wondering whether this would be the case of this family. Any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated. Thx Nicola x |
