If you live near London army births for overseas including Ireland are accessible from the Army book of births and marriages in the FRC. I have accessed army marriage and birth from Cork through this book, otherwise you can access them through 1837 Online via the Overseas Section. Janet

Possibly the births are in the Irish and Channel Islands indexes. I don't think Ireland counted as 'overseas' in the 1870s. Irish Records are with the Registrar General at Joyce House, 8-11 Lombard Street, Dublin 2, + 353 1635 40000, www.groireland.ie. Civil records for Northern Ireland from 1922 are kept by the Registrar General of Northern Ireland at Oxford House, 49-55 Chichester Street, Belfast BT1 4HL (0232 235221), www.nisra.gov.uk/gro. Genuki Channel Islands page http://user.itl.net/~glen/genukici.html possibly useful link regarding Alderney & the British Army http://user.itl.net/~glen/aldarmy.html

Is there anywhere you can find birth details of children who were born overseas while their father was in the Army? I have Alice Gurney who (according to 1881 Census) was born 1870/71 in Kinsale, Cork, Ireland. I'm guessing, as her parents married April 1870, that she probably arrived a few months later. The marriage was a register office job and I'm guessing a 'shotgun' was involved! Another daughter Ellen Mary was born in Alderney, Channel Islands, about 4 years later.
