My ancestors were wheelwrights and blacksmiths. They were very skilled craftsman. Their work varied from building coaches for the Lord of the Manor, to repairing household items for the people of the village. As they relied on the coaching trade they ran their businesses from inns, and are described in old trade directories as 'Wheelwright, Blacksmith and Beer House Keeper'. As motor cars become more popular, then the wheelwrights trade declined. My ancestor's business was sold at the end of WW2 and the premises become a garage. |

A wheelwright was a very highly-skilled craftsman - the wheel would then go to the blacksmith to have the iron hoop put on it. Jay |
