Cab proprietor

Just adding on to this...if he was a cab proprietor he may have owned either just the one cab or a whole fleet of them, employing horsemen, coachmen etc. My grt grandfather started out working as a horsekeeper/coachman for one of his elder brothers who was an omnibus proprietor and he then became a cab proprietor later on with his own fleet of cars once things turned motorised.

Yes, Hansom cabs were the horse drawn forerunners of todays taxis.

I think it means that he owned the cab, whether it is a horse drawn one or a motorised one. I might be wrong Nicola

Was a cab proprietor someone who ran a coach and horse or something? A bit like an old fashioned taxi service? It sounds like it could be that to me!
