I'm trying to trace my Great Grandmother, Annie Maria Rowley. From 1881 onwards she is listed as born Wolverhampton, Staffs abt 1862. My problem - there does not appear to be an Ann or Annie Rowley born abt 1862 Wolverhampton on the 1871 census, although there are several born in Staffs between 1860 and 1864. Other known details below. Thank you for your time. Barbara

The family obviously moved to another county - I have often found that nearest large place is given. presumably this was something the enumerator could make sense of? My friend has an ancestor recorded as having been born in Bolton, Lancashire. This is the enumerator trying to be clever, as we know from the bp reg he was actually born in a small hamlet called Bolton, just outside Pocklington, which is in Yorkshire. I also have my Norfolk family recorded as being born Ipswich, Norfolk in 1901 census for Northumberland. I often wonder if they were asked 'where did you come from?' (interpreted as where my journey started) rather than 'where were you born?' which would have prompted the correct answer, Trunch in Norfolk. Jay Jay

With thanks to Janet and Chris for the suggestions. Janet - I had thought about that There are 3 Ann or Annie Rowley's listed as born in Staffs abt 1862, and another 4 in 1861, none with father listed as William. Nothing quite fits. Barbara

Katharine

Katharine Report 15 Aug 2006 13:14

Hi There was an Annie Maria Rowley whose birth was registered in the last quarter of 1861 in Newcastle under Lyme (Staffs). Could thia be her? (vol 6b page 53). If you find she is any relation to Mary Rowley, born about 1800, I'd be interested to know! Kathy

Barbra Report 15 Aug 2006 13:34

Thanks for that Katharine. It COULD be her. I see she is listed on the 1871 census in the workhouse, no father in sight. Looks like I'll have to try that one, as someone has also pm'd me with that suggestion. If I do find a connection to your Mary Rowley I'll let you know. Barbara

Could she have been illegitimate and the William on the marr cert her grandtather, rather than father? Sorry, don't have Ancestry, so can't check out my ideas! Jay

Just to say that the likely candidate shows up on the Staffs BMD site, too: Surname First Name(s); Year; District; Region; Registers At; Reference ROWLEY Annie Maria; 1861; Newcastle-under-Lyme; Staffordshire; Newcastle-Under-Lyme; NUL/25/027 Christine

Thank you for that information Christine. Janet - I'll look into that one, thank you. I had wondered if there were any more lies on the marriage cert apart from the age. just wasn't sure where to start if that was the case. Next question - If I send for the cert which has been suggested and it doesn't give the father's name as William, how do I know she's the right one? Barbara

Could this be the Newcastle Under Lyme one? ANNIE MARIA ROWLEY - International Genealogical Index Gender: Female Christening: 04 JAN 1862 Maer, Stafford, England d/o Jane Rowley Can you find her in 1871?

Barbra

Barbra Report 15 Aug 2006 14:50

Janet That might be the Newcastle under Lyme one. There is a 30 year old Jane Rowley in the same workhouse in 1871 Unfortunately, my geography isn't that strong - so I don't know where Maer is. Thanks for your time and efforts. Barbara

According to google, about 6 miles south of Newcastle under Lyme. I wonder if Annie was illegitimate and is down on census under a different name, mother having married? Jay

Jsnet I've just had a look on Ancestry for Annie Maria, abt 1862, staffordshire and its brought up 4 names. Changing the Maria to M brings up 12 names. The interesting thng is that one of the Annie Maria's is born in Wolverhampton. I wonder if you could be on to something there? Now for the trawl through the bmd's to see if I can spot her birth being registered as a Frost. Thank you very much for all your help and ideas. Barbara

So much for that idea. There is an Annie M Frost registered in Wolverhampton in the July Quarter of 1861 Back to the Newcastle under lyme one then. (but I will check out the others) Barbara
