may thanks will try that. thought that this looked like it may be that. Hubby suggested he may have been a journey man of some sort who'd fallen on hard time or maybe an apprentice whod been let go for some reason as he was only 16 at the time...always assuming of course that its the same gentleman

I believe when someone asked for parish relief they had to prove they were from that parish to qualify. If they weren.t then they removed from the parish to go back to where they were born so as not be a burden He looks as if he was being questioned on where he legally came from Try googling 'parish relief' Shirley

after searching online at the national archives site I may have found a match for an elusive ancestor. I dont live anywhere near suffolk so it would be difficult to visit that records office but the details listed are as follows: 1797 'examination of Nathaniel Mills, residing in Snape, re the place of his last legal settlement' does any one know what this may be about? Was he possibly not from snape and they wanted to check he was not a nare do well. Or could it be he was asking for parish relief or something and they were checking up on that? If anyone knows Id be very gratefull. He was born in 1771(c) and only trace of him I have is 1841 census when he was an old man ....in the workhouse.
