Hi Jan Yes that is the marriage where I have the certificate. Her father's name is Edward. I have also been informed that my relative thought that Ada had a brother called Edward so I have tried putting all that in and can't come up with a suitable family!

Hi Thanks for your reply will have a look at this one but have a feeling this is one that I've already had a go at. x Just had a look - the 1901 census I have says that she was born in Battersea.

Hi Nell Will give that a go but it seems as if her surname is one of those that has changed over the years too. On everything I have she is called Ada Mary Gantlett but I have been informed Gauntlett is a variation of this. She is listed on the 1901 census with her husband Charles W Heaton as being born aorund 1874. On her death certificate in 1941 she died aged 66 which makes it around 1875 that she was born and her wedding certificate states that she was full age in 1897. Father Edward Gantlett. Cannot find her birth or her on any census prior to 1901. It is going my head in!!

Ada is a name in its own right. Perhaps it could be an abbreviation of Adelina etc. Have you checked individual index pages and looked for births for just 'female' in case she wasn't named when registered, or looked at the bottom of the page where they put additions after the index was compiled? nell

I found this for you if it's any good? ADA Gender: Feminine Usage: English, Polish Pronounced: AY-da [key] Short form of ADELAIDE. This name was borne by Augusta Ada King, Countess of Lovelace (known as Ada Lovelace), a daughter of Lord Byron. She was an assistant to Charles Babbage, the inventor of the analytical engine, an early mechanical computer.

Is it short for anything else as I am having trouble finding a birth record for a relative and it seems like she was using different DOBs and different times so that isn't making things easier!! Many Thanks
