Due to the children being registered in the mothers surname at the time of their birth, to take the new husbands name even though he is the father they would have to re-register them with their father's surname. Sue West Oz |

lol ok thanks for all that. As far as I know he is the Father of all the children so they did not have to be adopted by him. They lived together for many years before marrying in Nov 1966 when for what ever reason they have registered the children all over again with his surname. Sorry the more I right i feel i am confusing myself and everyone else lol sorry |

Have just realised you wrote that the new husband was their father. In that case no adoption necessary but they were reregistered as the marriage legitimised them so they were entitled to father's name on birth certificates. |

Not sure on this this, may you could get a copy of one of the certs. Perhaps when you are adopted, you are issued with a new birth certificate, from the date you are adopted? and that is why they are registered again? Claire |

Hi Janey I was born Claire Barnes, but when my mother married again in 1975 my name was changed by Deed poll to my stepfathers name. I believe because I was the first born to my mother when she remarried and they wanted more children, they felt it would 'look' better if I had the same surname as my brothers and sisters. So although my birth name is Barnes, my maiden name is actually Lewis, and this is on my marriage cert. You ancester may not have 'adopted; them as you had to have both biological parents permission ( assuming they were both alive) but they may have changed their name by Deed poll. Before I was married, whenever I had to apply for a passport etc, I had to produce my birth cert and my change of name deed. Hope this help, but it is confusing! Claire |

If on marriage the new husband adopted the children then yes, they would be reregistered with their new surname. (They're listed as 1966 registrations but the new certificates would of course give their real birth years!) |

Morning everyone Some advice needed please, came across this last night. I have 5 children born in the late 1950's and early 1960's all with the Mothers married name she then married again in Nov 1966 and then I find in 1966 all the same children are listed again as 1966 births with the Mothers second Husband's name. Is this normal!!!!! Thanks guy's janey |
