I have an ancestor who lived in Alton, Hampshire for all of his life but his death turns up in Pancras, London in 1890 (awaiting on cert) anyway, today I phoned Hampshire burial office for details of someother family members with same name and a very helpful lady read off a list of people with that name buried there....including Edward...this may be a silly question but how would they have got him from Pancras, London to Alton Hampshire???? As far as I can tell they didn't have much money?? |

Just looked up the distance between Pancras & Alton Hampshire & it is 55 miles, they probably carried the body on a cart? Georgina. |

His remains probably went by train - it was not uncommon to take people 'home' for burial and many Londoners were buried outside the city anyhow, due to shortage of burial space. A station was built at Brookwood especially for the cemetery. Jay |

Thanks Ladies!!! I wonder how long it would have taken by cart? also I wonder how much it would have cost by train? It's these little things about family history that really niggle me!!!!! |

Most people, even if very poor had a horror of a 'pauper's burial' and many would save for their funeral in a penny policy collected by the insurance agent weekly- this may have paid out enough to transport the body. |
